With its 17.3 inch screen, the Dell Inspiron i5748-2143sLV would make a good desktop replacement. Dell prides itself on manufacturing reliable laptops – those that will survive your lifestyle. This laptop offers high performance, speed, and lots of storage in a durable package that runs on Windows 8.1.

The screen is a beautiful 17.3” HD+ Widescreen LED backlit display with Truelife and 1600 x 900 resolution. The processor is the Fourth generation Intel Core i3-4030U, a dual core ULV (ultra-low voltage) processor based on the Haswell microarchitecture. It was released in April 2014. The two cores can handle up to four threads in parallel due to Hyperthreading. The clock speed is 1.9 GHz, and there is no Turbo Boost. Core processors from Intel are superior in performance to Celeron and Pentium processors. The processor makes this machine a good entertainment center, although you should not expect it to handle complex games. An ultra-low voltage processor improves the computer’s battery life while providing good performance. The battery life on this laptop is 5.75 hours.

The laptop comes with 4 GB DDR3 RAM, which is enough for good multi-tasking. This is typical of what is found in today’s modern computers. You will be able to have multiple programs running at once with no problems. If you want to increase the multi-tasking capabilities, then you can upgrade the memory to 8 GB. This laptop comes with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. Note that this particular model is not a touch screen, although some of the 17.3” laptops from Dell have this feature.

This laptop has a 500 GB hard drive. This is typical of the size of hard drives found in today’s modern computers. It is large enough that you could use it to store as many as 160,000 high definition photos or 8,300 hours of music. For connecting devices, there are three USB ports, one of which is USB 3.0, which transfers data ten times faster than USB 2.0. For wirelessly connecting peripherals, the machine has Bluetooth. You could, for example, connect external speakers wirelessly using Bluetooth. The machine has a DVD drive but not a Blu-ray player. You could purchase an external Blu-ray drive and connect it using one of the USB 3.0 ports. The computer weighs 6.73 lb. This does not make the computer light, but it is certainly portable, especially for a 17.3” screen size. It is reasonably thin, at just over an inch in thickness. The keyboard is not backlit, and the sound is enhanced with Wave Maxx Audio.

The Dell Inspiron i5748-2143sLV is a modern and powerful 17.3” laptop that is well-suited for general computer tasks. It is not a gaming machine, but it will handle basic games. It is a modern laptop in every sense, and it will easily meet your computer needs for several years.
